Book swaps and eating out
Over a period of several years Sheilah Plumley has actively supported a number of initiatives. The best known are the regular book swaps and eating out with Mange Tout.
Book Swap
Reading books is a favourite pass-time of many of the English but they they quickly devour their own books and need to find new ones to read. They realise that to keep this hundger satisfied they will have to spend large sums on buying books with the resulting consumption of every surface in the house as these are stored. An alternative came into existence with the creation of a free book sap. Initially it passed round many houses, but the number of books became too many. Fortunately a permenant home was found at the Centre socio-culturel in Confolens and Sheilah and Roy took responsibility for organising these regular events.
This is not restricted to the English books but they form the largest part. Books in other languages would be very welcome as this would increase the range of books on offer.
The book swaps are held at the Centre Socio-culturel in Confolens. Details of dates can be found in the events calendar Here you can bring along the books you have read and take away boks you wish to read. There is no charge. Whilst there you can have a cup of coffee and biscuit and chat with the people who have also come in search of light or heavy reading.
Mange Tout
The other initiative was to organise outings to restaurants for anyone who wishes to eat out and meet others. This is run informally so there are no associations to join and no obligation to come to every outing. Again this has run over many years and I would think that the majority of restaurants in this area, that can accomodate the numbers, have been tested.
The next outing is to the Nouvelles d'Asie in St Junien on the 24th February. I can personally say that this provides and interesting a varied menu at attractive prices.
All nationalities are made welcome.
The event dates can be found on the events calendar.
